ON THE WEB - Apps for Healthy Kids
Mission:
To challenge software developers, game designers, students, and other innovators to develop fun and engaging software tools and games that drive children, especially "tweens" (ages 9-12) — directly or through their parents — to eat better and be more physically active.
Background:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture-sponsored Apps for Healthy Kids competition is a part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation. A panel of experts will choose five winners in the games and tools categories, with the top prize and Healthymagination's student award winners each taking home $10,000.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the Apps for Healthy Kids Web site can download the USDA nutrition dataset, which is part of the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies; learn more about the
prizes and panel of judges; and view submitted projects in the application gallery. Registered site visitors can cast a vote and promote submissions through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. In addition, children can submit feedback through the interactive Whyville site designed specifically for children.
