Mission:
To aggregate, curate, and translate information from blogs and other "citizen media" outlets around the world, with an emphasis on voices that are not traditionally heard in mainstream media.

Background:
Founded in 2005 by former CNN Beijing and Tokyo bureau chief Rebecca MacKinnon and technology and Africa expert Ethan Zuckerman, Global Voices calls attention to voices and perspectives from around the world that may otherwise be missed, including non-English-language voices; facilitates the emergence of new citizen journalists through training and tutorials; and advocates for freedom of expression and other citizen journalists' rights. The organization is funded in part by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur and John S. and James L. Knight foundations.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Global Voices Web site presents grassroots media items that can be filtered by country, author, topic, keyword, or format, such as video, podcast, or photo. Through Global Voices' Lingua translation project, stories are — or will soon be — available in more than two dozen languages. The site also provides resources for bloggers, the media, and Global Voices authors as well as a special coverage section of summaries of major news stories, a list of author vacancies, and a link to the organization's many RSS feeds.
