On the Web - KnowHow2Go

Mission:
To encourage low-income and first-generation middle and high school students to take the necessary steps to prepare for college.

Background:
Launched in January 2007 by the Advertising Council, Lumina Foundation for Education, and the American Council on Education, KnowHow2GO is a national campaign designed to inform students and their parents about the importance of preparing for college and show them what it takes to get there. KnowHow2GO uses a network of grassroots partners and various forms of media to reinforce the campaign's message in local communities.

Outstanding Web Features:
To appeal to its young audience, the KnowHow2GO site features a multimedia public service announcement with warrior characters personifying "Algebra II," "Biology," and "Foreign Languages" who challenge students in cage-like settings to promote the message that preparing for college means taking the "tough classes." The site includes biographies of each warrior character; warrior "challenges" that teens can send to their friends; and links to the characters' profiles on MySpace, YouTube, and Facebook. Visitors to the site gain access to resources relevant to their age group by first choosing a grade level. Students can then listen to encouragement from a peer, read success stories, match their interests to possible career choices, take a college quiz, explore the interactive KnowHow2GO-U college campus tour, and access links to additional information. Mentors can learn how to encourage students as they get closer to graduation by choosing a grade level on the interactive timeline to get started. Resources are also available in Spanish.
