Background:
The Rockefeller Brothers Fund is a private family foundation established in 1940 as a vehicle through which the five sons and daughter of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., could share advice and research on charitable activities and combine some of their philanthropic efforts. Rockefeller made a substantial gift to the fund in 1951, and it received a major bequest from his estate in 1960. Since the establishment of the fund, three generations of family members have served as trustees. Shortly after RBF and the Charles E. Culpeper Foundation merged in 1999, the fund initiated a strategic review designed to evaluate its programs in light of the opportunities and challenges, both global and local, with which humanity is faced. The RBF's grantmaking is organized around four themes: democratic practice, sustainable development, peace and security, and human advancement. As of March 31, 2007, the market value of the fund's total assets was $915 million.
