On the Web - Lannan Foundation

Mission:
To promote cultural freedom, diversity, and creativity through projects that support exceptional contemporary artists and writers, as well as inspired Native activists in rural indigenous communities.

Background:
The Lannan Foundation was established in 1960 by financier, entrepreneur, and art collector J. Patrick Lannan Sr., who believed in the social importance of charitable programs and in the cultural importance of innovative, controversial visual and literary art. In 1986, the foundation received a substantial endowment from Lannan's estate, and since then it has supported its mission through literary, art, acquisitions and gifts, cultural freedom, and indigenous communities programs.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Lannan Foundation's Web site is easy to explore and offers links to podcasts, a video library, and an audio archive, as well as links to the foundation's storehouse of interviews, profiles, and recordings of writers and poets. On the home page, readers will find profiles of recent award and fellowship recipients, links to information about programs, grants, and residencies. In addition, the site offers biographies of the artists, writers, and activists the foundation has supported; audio files; and resources for each program category.
