Mission:
To help children, families, and communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty.
Background:
World Vision, an international Christian relief and development organization, was founded in 1950 to help children orphaned in the Korean War. Since its inception, the organization has helped nearly 100 million people with a staff of about 40,000 in nearly 100 countries throughout Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. World Vision provides emergency and hunger relief, long-term community development programs, agricultural development assistance, and leadership training. In addition, the organization educates the public on poverty- and justice-related issues and advocates on behalf of the poor and children in crisis.
Outstanding Web Features:
The World Vision Web site features an interactive map with detailed country profiles, a virtual tour of the charity's work around the world, and the World Vision Report, a weekly radio program hosted by former ABC World News Tonight correspondent Peggy Wehmeyer. In addition, the site offers blogs, podcasts, and videos. In response to the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the organization launched a Web portal with real-time updates via Facebook and Twitter of its relief work in the country. Visitors to the site can also join its advocacy network and support a broad range of social causes advocated by World Vision.
