Stavros Niarchos Foundation Awards $1 Million for University of Ottawa Scholarships
Marking a seventy-year partnership between Canada and Greece, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has announced the creation of a $1 million endowment to fund scholarships for Greek graduate students at the University of Ottawa. SNF Scholarships will provide funds for two Greek master's students a year to pursue their studies at the University of Ottawa; the scholarships will cover the cost of books, living expenses, and transportation to and from Canada. "This collaboration will provide numerous qualified Greek students with much-needed financial assistance," said SNF co-president Andreas Dracopoulos, "and the opportunity to pursue their studies and benefit from the University of Ottawa's excellent academic environment and programs." SNF Scholarship recipients also will be eligible for the renewable Ottawa Excellence Scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition. The first SNF Scholarship recipients will be selected for the 2013-14 academic year. "This generous gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation will help the University of Ottawa take the next step in becoming a top destination for international students," said University of Ottawa president Allan Rock. "Today's announcement is such a fitting tribute to seventy years of relations between Canada and Greece. I look forward to strengthened collaboration and ties between our two countries as a result of this tremendous gift."
