Bush Foundation Names Third Cohort of 2012 Bush Fellows
The Bush Foundation in St. Paul has announced the third cohort of Bush Fellows for 2012. The ten community activists from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota will receive two-year grants ranging between $25,000 and $75,000 through the Bush Fellowship Program to pursue sustainable solutions to specific social or economic issues in their communities. Projects to be undertaken by the latest group of Bush Fellows include efforts to strengthen education for hearing-impaired infants and toddlers, boost the civic engagement of Native American youth and the Laotian-American community, revitalize rural communities in the region, improve access to transit and regional systems, advocate for equitable government fiscal policies, help Latino children with learning disabilities, and improve healthcare delivery to Native Americans. The fellows in this cohort join nineteen others who were named in June and August. Applications for the fourth round, which is open to elected and public officials only, are due November 20, 2012, with fellowship recipients to be announced in February 2013. "For most of our nearly sixty-year history, the Bush Foundation has supported individuals in developing their leadership abilities so they can be more effective in engaging with others and advocating for community change," said Martha Lee, the program's manager. "Undertaking these activities involves facing and managing the substantial risks and conflicts that arise when Fellows work on such complex problems and include people with diverse opinions in the change process. We admire the willingness of all Bush Fellows to learn about themselves and engage in their communities in such deep ways."
