New York Community Trust Announces $5.7 Million in Grants

The New York Community Trust has announced grants totaling $5.7 million to nonprofit organizations working to meet the needs of New York City residents.

Seventy-seven grants were awarded to organizations working in a range of fields, including the arts, education, health, human services, and youth development. The recipients include the Lawyers Alliance for New York, which was awarded $400,000 to provide management assistance to nonprofits facing public funding cuts; Inwood House, which will receive $275,000 to make child welfare agencies more responsive to the needs of young mothers; the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which was awarded $150,000 to help build the capacity of community development corporations; and the United Neighborhood Houses of New York, which will receive $120,000 to help settlement houses build stronger, more effective youth programs through partnerships.

In addition, the trust awarded $125,000 to the New York City Workforce Development Fund to enable workforce development initiatives in the region; $100,000 to the Teachers and Writers Collaborative to provide creative writing instruction that ties in with social studies and science curricula at thirteen middle schools in the city; $80,000 to the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services to apply for a license to open the city's first mental health clinic for court-involved youth; and $30,000 to GrowNYC to create gardens at New York City public schools.
