Community Foundation Update (10/13/12) California

The San Diego Foundation has announced a total of $650,888 in grants to twenty environmental nonprofit organizations in the region. Grants ranging from $9,600 to $45,000 were awarded for climate, land, water use, and clean environment initiatives. Recipients include the Anza-Borrego Foundation, Groundwork San Diego - Chollas Creek, Outdoor Outreach, the Escondido Creek Conservancy, the San Diego River Park Foundation, and WalkSanDiego.

Connecticut

The Fairfield County Community Foundation in Norwalk has awarded $10,000 to the Trumbull-based Kennedy Center to enhance its services at the Norma F. Pfriem Foundation Alzheimer's Center in Bridgeport, the Trumbull Times reports. With the funds, the center will provide direct support services to individuals with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease; help families, caregivers and health providers with education and technical assistance; and increase community awareness and support for individuals with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced more than $570,000 in grants to address poverty in the region. Recipients include the Center for Economic Progress, Operation Warm, and the Chicago Community Trust for State of Illinois.

Louisiana

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced that it will house the NOLA FOR LIFE Fund, created by the City of New Orleans as a part of "Flip the Script," a multimedia public awareness campaign produced by award-winning film director Spike Lee in support of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's NOLA FOR LIFE homicide reduction strategy. The city will match, up to $250,000, tax-deductible donations to the fund, which received a gift of $1 million earlier this month.

Minnesota

The Rochester Area Foundation has named Ann Fahy-Gust as its donor and grants services manager.

Nebraska

The McCook Community Foundation Fund, an affiliate of the Lincoln-based Nebraska Community Foundation, has awarded nearly $37,000 in grants through several funds this year, the McCook Daily Gazette reports. Recipients include McCook Community College, the McCook Public Library, the Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute, and the Hillcrest Nursing Home Foundation.

Utah

For the third consecutive year, the Community Foundation of Utah in Salt Lake City has recognized fifty individuals who are making a difference in the lives of the state's residents through innovation, collaboration, and commitment to the common good. Modeled on vSpring Capital's v100 and nominated by a diverse group of community members, Utah's Enlightened 50 showcases the efforts of individuals who are considered to be social innovators, builders, and visionaries.

Wisconsin

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced that during fiscal year 2012 it awarded nearly $5.2 million in grants to 464 nonprofit organizations. During the year, nonprofits in the human services category received 32 percent of the foundation's grant dollars, education nonprofits received 20 percent, and public benefit organizations received 16 percent. Since its inception in 1991, the foundation has awarded nearly $72 million in grants.
