Carnegie Corporation Awards $1.4 Million in Grants to Assess Iran Security Threats

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced grants totaling $1.4 million to four organizations working to provide policy makers with the most current technical assessments, research, and analysis on the international security issues posed by Iran.

Awarded through the foundation's international peace and security program, the grants will support efforts to explore and promote diplomatic measures that could halt Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons capabilities and provide an analysis of the implications and contingency planning necessary should deterrence prove unsuccessful. Grant recipients include the Russian Center for Policy Studies, which was awarded $450,000 in support of informal diplomatic efforts to advance Russian-U.S. consultations on Iran; the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, which received $325,000 to examine the potential consequences of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon; and the Center for a New American Security, which was awarded $321,600 to identify and inform policy makers and the American public about specific approaches intended to deter Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

The foundation also awarded $300,000 to the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University in support of efforts to forge greater domestic and international consensus about the challenges of nuclear proliferation in general and measures employed to thwart the spread of nuclear weapons to Iran.

"The standoff with Iran over its disputed nuclear program has increased the demand — particularly within Congress and the Obama administration — for credible analysis and practical and effective approaches to avoiding military confrontation," said Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian. "The corporation's grantmaking in its nuclear security program aims to support the experts and institutions that can provide policy makers with the research and know-how needed to help strengthen existing international norms and rules against the spread and use of nuclear weapons and to ensure that fissile material and other components of nuclear weapons are safe, secure, and under international monitoring and supervision."
