Carnegie Corporation of New York Awards $21.1 Million in Third-Quarter Grants

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced third-quarter grants totaling more than $21.1 million to organizations working in the United States and around the world.

Grants made through the foundation's international program include $1.2 million over three years to the University of Cambridge to promote, in partnership with the University of Ghana and Makerere University, research excellence and retention of early- and mid-career scholars and scientists; $940,000 over two years to Harvard University in support of training programs for military officers and policy makers; $700,000 over two years to the Brookings Institution in support of its foreign policy program; and $450,000 over two years to the Council on Foreign Relations to support the creation of a series of media guides on global challenges and CFR's Council of Councils initiative.

Through its national program, the foundation awarded $500,000 over two years to the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future to document and evaluate STEM learning studios; and $336,000 to Green Dot Public Schools in support of a partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District to train turnaround school leaders and redesign school environments in a way that encourages more effective school leadership.

Grants awarded through the foundation's external affairs/future of journalism education program include $150,000 over two years to the Regents of the University of California, Berkeley to improve scientific reporting through curriculum enrichment; $149,400 over two years to Northwestern University in support of its science translation project, which aims to improve the quality and credibility of scientific journalism; and $149,000 over two years to the University of Missouri, Columbia in support of its new science, health, and agricultural journalism program.

The foundation also awarded centennial grants to Carnegie Mellon University (two grants totaling $1 million), the Carnegie Hall Society ($375,000), and the New York Botanical Garden ($125,000).
