Community Foundation Update (6/16/12) Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced the first anniversary of Birmingmham365.org, a site designed to enhance the area's quality of life by serving as a social and civic hub for residents and visitors. Operated by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, the site also is supported by the foundation.

Florida

The Indian River Community Foundation in Vero Beach has awarded more than $200,000 in grants to organizations working to help residents hardest hit by the recession, the Treasure Coast Palm reports. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 were awarded to eight organizations, including Hunters Against Hunger, the Children's Home Society, the Harvest Food and Outreach Center, and the Learning Alliance.

Massachusetts

The Cape Cod Foundation in Yarmouthport has appointed Michael J. Brogioli as its new executive director. Currently executive director and CEO of the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities, Brogioli has worked in the nonprofit sector for several years.

The Essex County Community Foundation in Danvers has appointed Steven P. Cohen, Robert R. Fanning, Jr., Susan J. Gray and Kevin M. Tierney, Sr., to its board of trustees.

Michigan

The Detroit-based Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced Ken Fischer, president of the University Musical Society of the University of Michigan, as the recipient of the 2012 Mariam C. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership. Under Fischer's leadership, UMS has deepened its engagement with area colleges and universities and created relationships with leading corporations, arts organizations, public and private schools, and community organizations. UMS will receive a grant of $10,000 from the foundation, which would prefer that the funds be used by Fischer to continue his professional education, take a personal sabbatical, or engage in philanthropic leadership activities.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has named Bob Bates, Jennifer Hamann, Sharon Kresha, Jeff Snyder, and Mark Weber to its board of directors.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has given its inaugural Outstanding Professional Adviser Award to Gerard Flood, of counsel at Davis & Kuelthau.. The award recognizes the contribution that professional advisers make in building relationships with the foundation and helping their clients create charitable funds for the benefit of the community.
