Stavros Niarchos Foundation Receives 2012 Athenagoras Human Rights Award

The Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in New York City has announced that the Athens-based Stavros Niarchos Foundation is the recipient of its 2012 Athenagoras Human Rights Award.

To be presented to the foundation on October 20, the award is given annually to an individual or organization that has consistently exemplified concern for the basic rights and religious freedom of all people by action, purpose, and dedication.

Founded with an estate gift from the late Greek shipping tycoon and businessman Stavros Niarchos, the Niarchos Foundation supports organizations and projects that exhibit strong leadership and sound management and are working to achieve a broad, lasting, and positive social impact. Since it was established in 1996, the foundation has awarded more than $1.27 billion in grants to organizations in more than a hundred nations in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare. Most recently, the foundation committed $130 million over three years to help ease the adverse effects of the deepening socioeconomic crisis in Greece.

"Emblematic of the foundation's commitment to fundamental human rights was its recent grant of $130 million to the people of the Hellenic Republic to ease the social, medical, and humanitarian adverse effects created by the unprecedented socioeconomic crisis," said Anthony J. Limberakis, national commander of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. "[T]he Archons of America are most proud of the human rights accomplishments of the foundation and we look forward to presenting the 2012 Athenagoras Human Rights Award to such a most worthy recipient."
