Foundation Center, Development Gateway Announce Partnership
The New York City-based Foundation Center and Development Gateway in Washington, D.C., have announced a strategic partnership that will see them combine their expertise in global philanthropy and development to produce a clearer picture of international aid flows. The collaboration will enable the organizations to enhance their existing online data platforms, making collaboration between foundations, foreign aid agencies, and nonprofits easier and more efficient. As part of the effort, AidData.org — a joint initiative of Development Gateway, the College of William and Mary, and Brigham Young University — will be enhanced with data from the Foundation Center to create a more comprehensive picture of philanthropic resources allocated for international development — information that will be visualized in dashboards alongside information about public aid flows. In turn, Development Gateway's data about official aid flows will be integrated into existing Foundation Center resources, including WASHFunders.org, a Web portal that facilitates collaboration among donors interested in global safe water, sanitation, and hygiene issues. "The Foundation Center has been a leading light for private philanthropy, providing the data and analysis needed to help organizations achieve greater impact. We see this partnership as a natural fit," said Jean-Louis Sarbib, CEO of Development Gateway. "Better information is the first step to understanding what works, what doesn't work, and how to make a difference in improving lives." "Our role in collecting, classifying, and curating data on philanthropic activity around the globe provides a solid foundation on which donors, governments, and [nongovernmental organizations] can base their strategic decisions," said Jeffrey Falkenstein, vice president for data acquisition and architecture at the Foundation Center. "Through this partnership with Development Gateway, the access and impact will be multiplied through the fusion of two distinct but complementary streams of data."
