Prostate Cancer Foundation Adds Two Dozen Researchers to 2011 Young Investigators Class

The Prostate Cancer Foundation has announced the addition of twenty-four researchers to its 2011 Young Investigators class, boosting the number of PCF-supported YI projects to seventy-four and the foundation's investment in their work to more than $5.2 million.

Each YI recipient is awarded $225,000 over three years — an amount matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis by the researcher's institution — to help protect his or her time or to bridge salary support prior to the researcher's first government grant. Recipients include Christopher Barbieri of Weill Cornell Medical College, whose research will further inform sub-typing of and, eventually, personalized treatment for prostate cancer patients; Maria Karlou of the University of Athens, who is working to address the challenges of resistance to therapy and cancer progression in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients by studying cancer progression in mouse- and cell-based models of human prostate cancer; and Antoinette Perry, Institute of Molecular Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, who is developing blood and urine biomarkers for non-invasive detection of aggressive prostate cancer.
