Health Sciences South Carolina Receives More Than $11 Million From Duke Endowment

Health Sciences South Carolina, a statewide biomedical research collaborative, has announced an $11.25 million grant from the Duke Endowment in support of its existing programs and to advance a new strategy focused on translating its research into better clinical care throughout the state.

The grant will enable HSSC to continue building and implementing a healthcare information technology and clinical trials network that includes a statewide clinical data warehouse designed to compile real-time clinical data from HSSC hospitals. Among other things, the network hopes to make research more efficient, enable medical teams to make evidence-based decisions resulting in better patient care, and help South Carolina attract clinical trials, which can benefit patients and boost the state's economy.

Support from the endowment also will be used to help HSSC accelerate the integration of healthcare quality and patient safety innovations, which the collaborative believes can significantly improve how some of the most critical chronic diseases are treated and reduce healthcare costs.

"This grant will help us continue to improve health, health care, and health research in South Carolina," said HSSC president and CEO Dr. Jay Moskowitz. "HSSC, through the support of the Duke Endowment, can translate research discoveries into improved delivery and care models and healthier lifestyles that will benefit not only South Carolinians, but all humanity."
