Home Depot Foundation Awards $1 Million to Volunteers of America's Homeless Veterans Programs

Home Depot Foundation Awards $1 Million to Volunteers of America's Homeless Veterans Programs

Volunteers of America has announced grants totaling $1 million from the Home Depot Foundation for programs working to address housing needs and services for veterans.

The grants include $750,000 for VoA programs in ten cities that will refurbish transitional housing for 242 veterans and provide eight single-family homes for purchase or lease-purchase. An additional $250,000 will fund and equip a mobile service van to assist disabled or elderly veterans in Florida with home repairs and modifications while providing veterans in a job training program with work experience.

The grants are part of the Home Depot Foundation's Celebration of Service initiative, which will include $9.1 million in grants to veterans' programs to be announced between September 11 and November 11. Since announcing its three-year, $30 million commitment to address veterans' housing needs in April, the foundation has pledged a total of $2.8 million over three years to Volunteers of America and allocated $1.6 million to date.

"The level of support we've received from the Home Depot Foundation has been phenomenal," said Volunteers of America national president Mike King. "Every night, thousands of veterans are homeless in cities throughout the United States. Volunteers of America is committed to ensuring that those who served our country are not forgotten and relegated to living life on the streets."
