Rockefeller Foundation Awards $3 Million to New York City Arts Organizations

The New York City-based Rockefeller Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $3 million to sixteen arts organizations through its New York City Cultural Innovation Fund.

Launched in 2007, the fund awards two-year grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 to initiatives designed to enrich New York City's cultural life and help ensure the continued economic strength and diversity of the city's creative sector. The works of many of this year's winners emphasize broad cross-sector collaboration, such as coordination between artists and community members, artists and climate scientists, institutions and community-based organizations, and local and international artists.

This year's grant recipients also represent a variety of artistic approaches, ranging from 3D high-definition films of dance productions to mentoring programs for documentary filmmakers. Three prominent leaders from the fields of innovation and the arts — David Thorpe, director of innovation at the Institute for State Effectiveness; Z + Partners founder Andrew Zolli, who also curates the annual Pop!Tech conference; and Eungie Joo, the Keith Haring director and curator of education and public programs at the New Museum — served as advisors to the fund.

"The Rockefeller Foundation is thrilled to continue our tradition of supporting art and creativity in our home town of New York City through the Cultural Innovation Fund," said Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin. "As the creative sector continues to struggle in today's economy, it is critical that our city's artists have the resources they need to continue to create innovative and thought-provoking work that challenges all of us to question and explore new ideas."
