UN Foundation, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Church and Missouri Synod Announce $45 Million Campaign to Fight Malaria

The United Nations Foundation, Lutheran World Relief, and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod have announced the launch of a $45 million campaign to prevent and treat malaria across Africa.

The Lutheran Malaria Initiative aims to drive resources to African communities where the three organizations currently work in order to advance the global goal of ending deaths from malaria by 2015. The partnership will build on the longstanding efforts of LWR and LCMS to raise awareness about the effects of malaria in rural communities across the African continent as well as UNF's malaria prevention work, which includes several partnerships with other organizations and its Nothing but Nets campaign. According to the UN Foundation although malaria is both preventable and treatable, the disease continues to claim the life of a child every forty-five seconds.

"Up to 60 percent of health care in developing countries is provided by faith-based organizations, like our Lutheran partners," said UN Foundation CEO Kathy Calvin. "It is inspiring to see how the Lutheran community in the U.S. can help the UN reach families in rural villages on the other side of the world."
