KeyBank Foundation Awards $1 Million for Breast Cancer Training, Outreach
The KeyBank Foundation has announced a $1 million grant to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund a training and outreach program that could serve more than a hundred thousand medically underserved women in six states. The grant, the foundation's largest to date at the national level, will be used to establish the Susan G. Komen Lay Health Advisors Training Program, which aims to train nearly five hundred advisors over four years to provide breast cancer education and outreach, including referrals to healthcare resources, one-on-one consultations, assistance with scheduling, and support during healthcare visits. The program will be launched in Northeast Ohio, then expanded in 2012 and 2013 to seventeen KeyCorp communities in Colorado, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington. "[The] impact [of breast cancer] is especially devastating for women of color, who are more likely to die from breast cancer, and for poor or uninsured women who lack access to healthcare resources," said KeyCorp president and COO Beth E. Mooney. "These women may be unaware of their risk for breast cancer, unable to access the healthcare system for answers, or unsupported if they do need treatment," said Komen founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker. "Our mission is to ensure that all women have the information and support they need to confront this disease."
