New York Community Trust Announces Nearly $4 Million in First-Quarter Grants

The New York Community Trust has announced first-quarter grants totaling $3.86 million to thirty nonprofit organizations.

Grants were awarded to organizations working to overhaul the treatment of young offenders, help improve mass transit, strengthen restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, improve conditions in illegal boarding houses, and monitor how disabled children are faring in public schools. Recipients included Cancer Care, which was awarded $900,000 to cover the costs of chemotherapy, radiation treatment, childcare, and transportation for uninsured and underinsured cancer patients; Legal Services NYC, which received $700,000 to continue a partnership with the Legal Aid Society to assist poor New Yorkers; and the Human Services Council of New York, which was awarded $100,000 to promote cost-savings in government-funded human services.

The trust also awarded $65,000 to the New York Academy of Sciences to expand a program in which graduate students teach science courses at afterschool programs; $55,000 to the Orchestra of St. Luke's to promote a new rehearsal center for freelance orchestras; $35,000 to the Louis Armstrong House Museum for a publicity initiative; and $25,000 to Habitat for Humanity New York City to engage volunteers in community improvement projects in neighborhoods with public housing facilities.
