PND - Lilly Endowment Funds Academic Center Focused on Childhood, Theology, and Ethics
The Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. has announced a grant of $538,000 to Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, to establish a center that focuses on ethics and theology as they relate to children, the Northwest Indiana Times reports.
Led by humanities and theology professor Marcia Bunge, the Project on Childhood Studies, Theology, and Ethics will publish three books on the subject, promote related research and curriculum, and create a Web site with relevant scholarly resources. In addition, the center will bring together ethicists, biblical scholars, theologians, religious leaders, and educators to discuss children's issues.
"The project aims to establish reflection on children as a legitimate area of inquiry within theology, ethics, and religious studies and to encourage theologians and ethicists to contribute more significantly to public and academic debates about children and child well-being," said Bunge. "I also hope the project can help members of religious communities to increase their support for children and their families, to strengthen their efforts in spiritual formation and religious education, and to address more wholeheartedly the needs of children today."
