PND - NPower Expands Nationwide Network with Six New Affiliates
NPower, the Seattle-based organization that helps nonprofits acquire and use technology, has announced the creation of a nationwide network with six new affiliates. The expansion is a part of NPower's partnership with software giant Microsoft Corp., which renewed its commitment to the program in September and has pledged $25 million in cash and software donations to the organization over the next five years.
Programs in Atlanta, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Portland, and San Francisco have joined the NPower network to provide technology assistance to nonprofits at no charge or for a small fee. Founded in 1999, NPower helps nonprofits use technology more effectively and offers technology-consulting services such as planning and budgeting, database design and development, and installation of networking equipment. The organization plans to have thirteen NPower affiliates by the end of 2003.
"The expansion of the NPower network realizes a vision we also share at Microsoft: to assist community-based nonprofits in drawing on the immense potential of technology," said Bruce Brooks, director of Community Affairs at Microsoft. "With its deep understanding of both technology and the needs of nonprofits, NPower develops sustainable solutions that help nonprofits to better serve their communities."
One of the new affiliates, NPower NY, has already made an impact in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, distributing more than $500,000 in technology assistance and equipment to more than sixty nonprofits and, with support from Microsoft and IBM, helping to set up a network of 130 workstations at a family assistance center in Lower Manhattan.
