2013 U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars Announced

2013 U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars Announced

The Gates Cambridge Trust has announced its U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars for 2103.

Hailing from thirty-six U.S. colleges and universities, the thirty-nine scholars will use their scholarships, which cover the cost of tuition, board, and travel, to pursue graduate studies at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Fifty additional Gates Cambridge Scholars from other countries will be announced later this year. Established in 2001 with a $210 million endowment gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — still the largest single gift ever made to a university in the UK — the program selects recipients based on academic ability and their potential for leadership.

Twelve new universities are represented in this year's selection, bringing the total number of U.S. institutions with Gates Cambridge Scholars to a hundred and eighty-three. Institutions new to the program in 2013 include Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio; DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana; Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon; Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado; Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland; San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico; the State University of New York at Binghamton; the University of Maryland, College Park; the University of New Mexico; and Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

"[The 2013 U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars] are an outstanding group of individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds," said Robert Lethbridge, provost of the Gates Cambridge Trust. "They fully meet the criteria of the scholarship in being both intellectually outstanding and having a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. They should be proud of this achievement, and we can expect much of them."
