Gates Foundation Awards Western Governors University Nearly $1.2 Million for Competency-Based Learning

Gates Foundation Awards Western Governors University Nearly $1.2 Million for Competency-Based Learning

Western Governors University, an online university founded by the governors of nineteen states, has announced a three-year, $1.19 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to launch competency-based associate's degree programs in information technology.

WGU programs in Florida, Indiana, Texas, and Washington, D.C., will use the funds to partner with nine local community colleges to develop IT degree programs designed to provide working adults with an option for adding skills and expertise and obtaining an affordable, accredited post-secondary degree. In Texas, for instance, WGU Texas, in partnership with the Lone Star College System and Austin Community College, will demonstrate through a series of workshops, trainings, and seminars how to develop robust and functional competencies, curate curriculum, and administer appropriate assessments mapped to these competencies.

"This project is a great opportunity to work with two leading community colleges in Texas to bring more competency-based options to working Texans," said WGU Texas chancellor Mark David Milliron. "In addition, [LSCS chancellor] Dr. Richard Carpenter and [ACC president] Dr. Richard Rhodes will be effective voices to champion this innovation across the state."
