Allen Family Foundation Announces $6.9 Million in Grants

Allen Family Foundation Announces $6.9 Million in Grants

The Seattle-based Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $6.9 million to a broad range of nonprofits working to strengthen communities and foster economic resilience.

Library grants totaling $1.35 million will be used to improve library services and tech capabilities in the Pacific Northwest. Grant recipients include Washington State Library, which was awarded $200,000 to develop a smartphone app that provides rural patrons with basic library services; and the Walla Walla Public Library, which will receive $136,000 for a new technology lab.

The foundation also awarded grants to more than two dozen arts organizations in rural and urban areas of the region. Recipients include Oregon Public Broadcasting, which was awarded $120,000 to develop a new program covering the local arts community, and the Wrangell Cooperative Association in Alaska, which was awarded $100,000 in support of a carving facility and other initiatives. Grants also were awarded to help low-income residents achieve financial stability and in support of brain research exhibits at the Pacific Science Center, sustainable land use in Botswana and Zambia, and a variety of other projects in the region.

"The foundation believes in the mission and impact of local libraries, and the contribution they make to vibrant communities," said Allen Family Foundation vice president Susan M. Coliton. "We want to help libraries maintain relevance and financial stability by building lasting and meaningful connections with their patrons, especially young people."
