Piper Trust Awards $4.6 Million in Fourth-Quarter Grants

The Phoenix-based Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has announced grants totaling $4.6 million to local nonprofit organizations working in the areas of arts and culture, services for disadvantaged children, health care, and strengthening the nonprofit sector.

More than $2.8 million of the total will support significant service enhancements at three Maricopa County healthcare providers. Those grants include $2 million over four years to the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation for a new Cancer Transplant Institute at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center; $500,000 over two years to the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation for a new geriatric trauma unit; and $325,000 over two years to Adelante Healthcare to construct a new clinic and implement a comprehensive pediatric healthcare model.

Other grant recipients included the Arizona Opera, which was awarded $250,000 over two years to enhance its flexible theater space; the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, which received $438,000 over three years to design and pilot afterschool programming for middle school students in the community; and Regional Community Partners, which was awarded $30,000 to support aging in place projects through the Maricopa Association of Governments' Enhancing Age-Friendly Cities Initiative. In addition, the trust awarded a total of $350,000 to eight organizations through its Piper Fellows program.

"We must understand the ways health care can improve patient outcomes through innovative practices," said Piper Trust president and CEO Judy Jolley Mohraz. "Adelante Healthcare, John C. Lincoln Health Network, and Scottsdale Healthcare exemplify the leadership required to advance all facets of health care to new levels."
