Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio Awards $5.8 Million in 2012

The Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio has announced that it awarded more than $5.8 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations in 2012, an increase of 3 percent on a year-over-year basis.

Eighty-two grants were awarded to nonprofits located in all eight counties — Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, and Wilson — of the foundation's south Texas service region. In addition, the foundation awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to students pursuing health-related careers at twelve local institutions and $173,820 in "mini grants" of up to $7,500 to thirty-one organizations that support grassroots health activities.

The foundation also announced that Dr. Jim Potyka, a former chief of staff at Baptist Medical Center, the first medical director of San Antonio AirLife, and a former member of the Baptist Health Services Foundation's board of directors, was honored with its inaugural Spirit of Health Award.

"We salute these dedicated groups for helping us accomplish our mission of improving the health of our community by fostering and funding clinical, educational, spiritual, and scientific initiatives while honoring God and our Baptist heritage."
