Community Foundation Update (12/22/12)

Community Foundation Update (12/22/12) California

The Fresno Regional Foundation has announced four grants totaling $64,779 in support of efforts to restore the San Joaquin and Kings rivers and to engage and educate children about the importance of rivers to the Central Valley. The recipients are the San Joaquin River Stewardship Program ($24,998), California State University, Fresno ($23,633), the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fresno County ($9,848), and the Fresno Chafee Zoo ($6,300).

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced that its Community News Matters program awarded grants totaling $70,000 to fourteen community news projects in support of issues affecting the south and west sides of Chicago. Each project will receive $5,000 for original reporting and data analysis. Recipients include the Neighborhood Writing Alliance, Windy City Times, and The Gate.

Indiana

The Central Indiana Community Foundation has announced that the Legacy Fund, one of its affiliates, has recognized the Harger family for their long-term commitment to Hamilton County and education with its Living Legacy Award.

Michigan

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has announced that in 2013 it will work to improve the visibility and scope of its LGBT Equality Fund. Established in 2000, the fund has approximately $800,000 in assets and has awarded more than $410,000 in grants over its lifetime. However, a six-month project earlier this year designed to find ways to increase both the number of donors and grantseekers confirmed that the fund is inadequate to meet the needs of the LGBT community in Kalammazoo. Recommendations approved for implementation in 2013 include partnering with grantees to relaunch the fund and communicate its mission and capacity; increasing the fund's presence at major LGBT events; boosting the fund's visibility; and revitalizing its supporting committee.

Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Foundation has appointed Molly Beerman as vice president of finance.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced a grant of $20,000 to Balance, Inc. to help the organization operate the Center for Community Supported Living, which works with individuals with disabilities and their families to create a personal development plan that identifies the education, training, housing, and other supports they need.
