Claremont McKenna College Receives $50 Million Gift From Alumnus

Claremont McKenna College in California has announced a $50 million gift from trustee and alumnus George R. Roberts to help advance leadership, superior teaching, and scholarship at the school.

In recognition of the unrestricted gift, which pushes the amount raised for the Campaign for Claremont McKenna to more than $600 million, the college has designated a new fitness and athletic facility the Roberts Pavilion. The tri-level, 120,000-square-foot facility will support the college's co-educational varsity sports program; house the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, as well as areas for campus gatherings, a fitness center, recreational gym, weight room, and locker rooms; and provide a venue for community events.

Previously, Roberts established a matching gift program at the school known as the Roberts Challenge, which served as the catalyst for the endowment of twenty-seven faculty chairs and helped support construction of two academic buildings, Roberts North and Roberts South, as well as the founding of the Roberts Environmental Center.

"Claremont McKenna College teaches leadership, George Roberts lives it...at the highest standard," said Harry T. McMahon, chairman of the college's board of trustees. "His entrepreneurial zeal and vision for making the college the best it can be has been one of our greatest blessings. George's dedication to his alma mater has had a tremendous impact on virtually all aspects of life at CMC...and for that we cannot thank him enough."
