Newman's Own Foundation Awards $4 Million for Nutrition Programs

The Newman's Own Foundation has announced $4 million in grants to forty nonprofit organizations with nutrition programs.

Grants were awarded to nonprofits working to provide nutrition education for children and families, feed hungry children and/or reduce childhood obesity, and improve access to fresh food in underserved communities. The grants bring to $5 million the amount the Connecticut-based foundation has committed in support of nutrition programs this year.

Grants were awarded to Edible Schoolyard NYC in support of its health and wellness program for K-8 students in East Harlem; the Food Trust, which works to improve healthy food access and education for underserved children in Philadelphia; National Relief Charities, which provides Native American teenagers in Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota with tools to make nutritious food-shopping choices with limited resources; and Oakland-based People's Grocery, whose Growing Justice Institute helps community leaders develop income-generating projects that improve access to nutritious foods.

"For decades, Paul Newman and Newman's Own have supported organizations working to prevent hunger, such as food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries," said Newman's Own Foundation managing director Lisa Walker. "Today, the needs are becoming more complex with hunger and obesity escalating, and we're seeing a lack of access to nutritious food. We are pleased to support organizations that are impacting these areas."
