The Anchorage-based Alaska Community Foundation and the Alaska Children's Trust, a government program, are partnering to support efforts to prevent teen suicide, the Associated Press reports. Grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 will be awarded to nonprofits, tribes, schools, churches, and local government agencies working to provide Alaskans with the tools they need to respond to at-risk teens and take responsibility for preventing teen suicide.
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced that seven companies were recognized by the Entrepreneurs' Foundation of SVCF for making outstanding contributions to the community. They include Symantec, which was named Company of the Year, and Juniper Networks and Xilinx, which received Impact Awards.
More than four hundred people from twenty-three counties attended the fourth annual Neighborhood Summit in Atlanta to learn how they could effect change within their communities using new Web-based tools, the Saporta Report reports. Organized by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, the event exposes local leaders to tools and resources designed to help them make informed decisions about their communities.
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced grants totaling $958,000 to twenty organizations responding to emergency needs in the wake of Hurricane Isaac and to four organizations working to address environmental challenges in the region. Recipients include Boat People SOS LA, which was awarded $181,200 to address critical needs within the Vietnamese community; Just the Right Attitude, which received $170,000 to provide hot meals five days a week to more than a hundred and twenty families; the Nature Conservancy, which was awarded $118,250 in support of its planning work for the Lower Mississippi River; and Young Aspirations/Young Artists, which received $200,350 for Fresh Paths, a two-year art project involving a hundred and twenty youths in four southeastern Louisiana parishes.
The Pittsburgh Foundation has released its fourth annual report on the Pittsburgh Promise, which includes an assessment of the scholarship program's impact on its first four-year college graduating class. The program, which provides up to $40,000 for higher education to graduates of Pittsburgh Public Schools or one of its charter high schools who earn admission to any accredited public or private postsecondary school in Pennsylvania, also announced a new Executive Scholars effort to match Promise Scholars with Pittsburgh companies that have provided ongoing support to the program.
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced grants totaling $80,000 to help two local nonprofits increase the breadth and depth of new coverage in the city. United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee will receive $60,000 over two years to match a national challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that enabled it to expand its coverage of Milwaukee neighborhoods through the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. The Zilber Family Foundation also is contributing to the Knight challenge grant. In addition, the foundation awarded $20,000 to Radio Milwaukee in support of Community Stories, a regular series of short stories highlighting Milwaukee's neighborhoods, people, businesses, organizations, and other assets.
