Department of Education Awards Nearly $228 Million to Historically Black Colleges, Universities
The Department of Education has announced five-year grants totaling $227.9 million to nearly a hundred historically black colleges and universities to help them strengthen their academic resources, financial management systems, endowment-building capacity, and physical plants.
The awards will support such activities as curriculum reform, counseling and student service programs; the establishment of teacher education programs designed to qualify students to teach; faculty and staff development; and the acquisition of real estate in connection with construction or renovations that improve campus facilities. In addition, funds may be used for the purchase, rental, or lease of scientific or laboratory equipment and the development of academic instruction in disciplines in which African Americans are underrepresented.
"HBCUs have made enduring, even staggering contributions to American life despite the steep financial challenges many have faced," said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "The grants will help these important institutions continue to provide their students with the quality education they need to compete in the global economy."
