Western Union Foundation Awards More Than $2.7 Million in First Half of 2012

The Western Union Foundation has announced that it awarded more than $2.7 million in grants during the first six months of 2012 to sixty-three nonprofit organizations in twenty-one countries.

Selected with input from Western Union employees and participants in the Ashoka Executive-in-Residence program, the grants will be used to advance programs that create economic opportunity or provide relief in the wake of a natural disaster. The foundation also announced that it awarded grants to partner organizations in Lithuania and in the Asia-Pacific region through its global Volunteering for Better campaign and, through its Give2Asia initiative, to HOPE Worldwide in Hong Kong, Assist in India, the Balete Farm School in the Philippines, and Junctions Work in Australia.

"Around the world, Western Union employees unselfishly spend time making a difference in their communities. They do it as individuals, with their families, and as work groups because they are motivated to make the world a better place," said Western Union Foundation president Luella Chavez D'Angelo, who also serves as senior vice president of Western Union Social Ventures. "Their commitment and first-hand knowledge of the communities we serve, allows us to identify and fund extraordinary organizations that are helping people better their lives."
