Allen Family Foundation Awards $1.6 Million to Human Services, Arts Nonprofits

Allen Family Foundation Awards $1.6 Million to Human Services, Arts Nonprofits

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation in Seattle has announced grants totaling more than $1.6 million to nonprofits working to assist people with basic needs in western Washington state and arts and cultural organizations in five states.

The grants to fund basic needs such as food, shelter, and legal assistance for individuals and families facing foreclosure or eviction — a priority area for the foundation — are expected to benefit 851,000 people in the Pacific Northwest. The grants include $100,000 each to the Bellingham Food Bank, the Downtown Emergency Service Center, Solid Ground, and Hopelink, as well as a grant of $150,000 to Food Lifeline.

The arts grants were awarded to nonprofits in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, with an emphasis on theater projects featuring contemporary work. Grant recipients include the Perseverance Theatre in Douglas, Alaska; Company of Fools in Hailey, Idaho; the Miracle Theatre Group in Portland, Oregon; and the Seattle Theatre Group.

"The ongoing economic difficulties in our state, as well as cuts to government programs that aid vulnerable populations, tell us we must continue our commitment to basic needs," said Susan M. Coliton, vice president of the Allen Family Foundation. "These keystone organizations have the expertise and stability to continue providing meaningful and measurable help to people struggling in the Puget Sound region."
