Community Foundation Update (8/11/12) | PND

The Chicago Community Trust has announced that it is working with Sun-Times Media to find an executive director for the Sun-Times Foundation, a donor-advised fund of the community foundation. The deadline for applications is August 24.

The Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts in Fitchburg has awarded seventeen grants totaling nearly $200,000 from its general endowment, the Leominster Champion reports. Recipients include Historical Piano Concerts, Inc., Literacy Volunteers of Montachusett Area, North Quabbin Citizen Advocacy, and the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society.

The Grand Island Community Foundation has named Tamara Morris as its new executive director, effective September 10, the Grand Island Independent reports. Morris currently is executive director of Hall County Leadership Tomorrow.

In the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, which left many businesses and individuals in the upstate New York area devastated, the Adirondack Community Trust in Lake Placid has received and distributed more than $800,000 in gifts from around the country, North Country Public Radio reports. Through partnerships with the Keene Flood Recovery Fund and the Jay Irene Flood Relief Fund, ACT has awarded more than two hundred grants to over a hundred households, fourteen businesses, and four civic organizations. The foundation also worked closely with the Greater New Orleans Foundation, which shared lessons it learned after hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2006.

The J. Warren & Lois McClure Foundation, a supporting organization of the Middlebury-based Vermont Community Foundation, has announced grants totaling more than $450,000 in support of programs to improve access to college and career education for all Vermonters. The bulk of the grants will serve ongoing programs and new initiatives at the Community College of Vermont, which enrolled more than sixty-one hundred Vermonters last fall.

The Wheeling-based Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to students in the Upper Ohio Valley region, WTRF reports. Scholarships ranging from $200 to $10,000 were awarded from more than fifty funds administered by the foundation.
