Community Foundation Update (8/04/12)

California

The Los Angeles-based California Community Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2012 Fellowship for Visual Artists. Twenty mid-career and emerging visual artists will receive grants ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 as well as professional development opportunities.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $654,090 to organizations in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties that provide legal services to immigrants seeking to become U.S. residents. Recipients include Collaborative Resources for Immigrant Services on the Peninsula ($300,000) and Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County ($250,000).

Iowa

The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa has announced grants totaling $284,500 to forty-seven nonprofits, including a $10,000 grant to the African American Historical and Cultural Museum in Cedar Rapids toward construction of an outdoor entertainment center and a $3,000 grant to the Youth Sports Foundation in Muscatine for the purchase of new football helmets.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced the appointment of Lindsey Rossow-Rood as philanthropic services officer. Rossow-Rood currently serves as director of development and alumni relations at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work, where she oversees the school's endowment and various gift accounts.

Texas

The Dallas-based Communities Foundation of Texas has awarded the first James 1:5 Scholarship to Ryan Lorey, a recent graduate of Rockwall Heath High School. Made possible by an anonymous donation to CFT, the $40,000 scholarship will be awarded every four years to a high school senior at Rockwall High School, Rockwall Heath High School, or Royce City High School who intends to study nursing, engineering, math, computer sciences, technology, or business at the University of Texas at Austin.

Vermont

The Middlebury-based Vermont Community Foundation has announced the creation of the Northeast Kingdom Fund, which will support organizations in Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties working in the areas of education, health care, education, economic development, the environment, arts and culture, and sustainability. Applications are being accepted online through September 7 for grants ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Washington

The Grays Harbor Community Foundation in Hoquiam has announced third-quarter grants totaling nearly $24,000 to local charities, KXRO Newsradio reports. Grant recipients included the Harbor Art Guild, Montesano School District, Aberdeen School District, and Our Aberdeen. The foundation also awarded $30,000 to four afterschool programs through a fund designated to support such initiatives.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced the election of Peter Bruce, of counsel at Davis & Kuelthau, as board chair. A member of the foundation's board since 2006, Bruce currently chairs its development committee and is a member of its community investment and administration audit committees. In addition to GMF, Bruce serves on the boards of Milwaukee-based Alverno College, the Curative Rehabilitation Foundation, and Urban Day School, as well as the Badger Meter Foundation, the Milwaukee Bar Association Foundation, and the American Management Association.
