The San Diego Foundation has named BongHwan (B.H.) Kim as vice president/executive director for its Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $400,000 to ten nonprofit organizations that use multimedia, face-to-face conversations, and other tools to build understanding about immigrants and their contributions to society. Ranging in amount from $10,000 to $60,000, the grants will fund communications campaigns that illustrate the real-life consequences of immigration-related policy decisions and share the stories of the journey immigrants make in leaving one home for another.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has announced $618,286 in grants to organizations that are part of the Literacy Empowers All Families program, a collaborative county-wide effort that aims to close language and achievement gaps. Recipients include Children First, the Early Learning Coalition, the Sarasota County School Board, and the Sarasota County Library System.

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced the appointment of Anson Beard, Judge Kathleen Kroll, and Peter Matwiczyk to its board of directors.

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced $700,000 in grants from the estate of John Marque, whose $20 million bequest to the foundation in 2008 was the largest gift in its history. In addition to an annual bequest of $50,000 to be divided equally among the top graduates of local nursing schools, including Dillard University, Delgado Community College, LSU Health Services Center Foundation, and Our Lady of Holy Cross College, a grant of $258,000 was awarded to Catholic Charities to make medical emergency grants to families needing financial assistance. Other recipients include Ozanam Inn, Mount Carmel Academy, Friends of City Park, and the Audubon Nature Institute.

The Columbus Foundation has announced that grants of up to $4,000 are available to help communities across central Ohio create gardens and green spaces. In its tenth year of partnering with Scotts Miracle-Gro, the foundation will award monetary and product and educational opportunities through the Franklin Park Conservancy and Botanical Gardens.

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced a five-year, $500,000 grant to Milwaukee Succeeds, a community education collaborative it helped create a year ago. The grant will help support the initiative's work to improve educational outcomes for all children in Milwaukee.
