Rhode Island Foundation Awards $15.3 Million in First Half of 2012
The Providence-based Rhode Island Foundation has announced that it awarded grants totaling more than $15.3 million in the first half of 2012, including nearly $6.4 million in discretionary awards made by foundation staff and directors.
The grants include $1.8 million awarded through its Fund for a Healthy Rhode Island to bolster the primary care system; $800,000 to expand professional development work in reading at the Learning Community charter school; and $25,000 in inaugural grants from the Black Philanthropy Initiative.
The foundation also awarded "strategy" grants totaling $2.2 million to forty-two local nonprofits working in the areas of arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environment, health, and human services to develop long-term solutions to community issues. Those grants included $200,000 to Riverwood Mental Health Services; $98,000 to the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families; and $35,000 to the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre.
"Through these grants, the foundation is responding to urgent, statewide issues by strengthening the nonprofit sector, supporting innovation, and encouraging collaboration and advocacy," said foundation president and CEO Neil D. Steinberg. "To do this, we depend on the vision and generosity of our donors, who place their trust and confidence in the foundation, so that together, we can address Rhode Island's most pressing needs and opportunities."
