Mott Foundation Awards $1 Million for Public Safety Efforts in Michigan
The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has awarded a $743,000 grant to the Flint police department to help the department maintain the size of its force and a $350,000 grant to the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, MLive.com reports.
The grant to the department will be used to bridge a short-term gap in public safety funding as the city continues its work on a long-term plan. Specifically, the funding will support the salaries of eleven officers for six months and support the operations of five mini-stations.
The grant to the School of Criminal Justice, which released a report last year that said the Flint police department is understaffed, will enable MSU researchers to continue to work with the department.
"Safety and security are huge issues in the city now," said Mott Foundation vice president of communications Carol D. Rugg. "As a corporate citizen, we understand we cannot offset the serious budget problems the city is facing....We hope it helps in the near terms."
