William Penn Foundation Awards $17 Million to Arts, Environmental, Community Organizations

The Philadelphia-based William Penn Foundation has announced grants totaling $17 million to nonprofits in the greater Philadelphia region working in the areas of arts and culture, community improvement and development, and the environment.

The foundation — which last week announced a three-year, $15 million grant to the Philadelphia School Partnership — awarded twenty grants totaling more than $10.8 million to arts and cultural groups in the region. Recipients of those grants include the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts ($2.5 million); the Arden Theatre Company ($660,000); and the Painted Bride Art Center ($150,000).

The foundation also awarded ten grants totaling more than $4.2 million to help fund watershed protection initiatives across the region, including $895,000 to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council to complete links in the East Coast Greenway and encourage green infrastructure approaches to urban stormwater management; $375,000 to the Sierra Club Foundation to expand its advocacy efforts with respect to natural gas-drilling policies; and $165,000 to the Brandywine Conservancy to help permanently protect key lands in the Pennsylvania Highlands and develop a greenway and trail plan for the Brandywine Creek Regional Recreation Corridor.

In addition, the foundation awarded five grants to nonprofits working to improve neighborhoods and develop economic opportunities in the region, including a $275,000 grant to the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Regional Foundation.
