Duke Endowment Announces $40 Million in New Grants
The Charlotte-based Duke Endowment has announced grants totaling more than $40 million to nonprofit organizations in the Carolinas.
Grants were awarded in support of child protection and youth development programs, efforts to improve health care and wellness across the region, and initiatives to fortify faith communities and their leaders. Recipients include the South Carolina Hospital Research and Education Foundation, which was awarded $1.65 million to help improve the quality of care and reduce costs at small and rural hospitals in the region; Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, which will receive $249,000 to implement two programs, Incredible Years and Strengthening Families; and Bethlehem United Methodist Church, which was awarded $55,000 in support of its Carpenters for Christ program and its efforts to provide housing for low-income families.
The endowment also awarded grants totaling $475,000 to Davidson College and Duke, Furman, and Johnson C. Smith universities for sustainability initiatives. In the past four years, the four institutions have launched projects that saved them on average $220,000 annually in energy costs.
