Community Foundation Update (7/07/12) California

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, has awarded a total of $107,403 to five programs seeking to boost the arts and culture in the Carlsbad community. Grants were awarded to the Carlsbad Community Theatre Showcase Company ($18,613), Carlsbad Music Festival ($15,080), Hacienda Project ($25,238), Harps in the City ($15,663), and the Shakespeare Network ($32,809).

The Orange County Community Foundation in Newport Beach has announced grants totaling $525,000 to organizations working to serve struggling families and veterans in the arae. The grants were funded by the foundation's ReachOutOC 2012 effort, which combined $345,000 in funding from the foundation with $180,000 raised from members of the community. Grants from the fourth annual ReachOut OC campaign will fund a variety of essential services, including wheels on meals, rent and utilities assistance, emergency and transitional shelter, a mobile clinic and health care services for children and families, and employment support for veterans.

Connecticut

The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut has announced grants totaling nearly $40,000 to twelve organizations. Ranging from $1,000 to $13,000, the awards include $2,000 to Audubon Sharon, $1,900 to the Torrington Historical Society, and $13,000 to the Norfolk Library.

Indiana

The Central Indiana Senior Fund, a fund administered by the Indianapolis-based Central Indiana Community Foundation, has announced that it received the 2012 Impact Award at the annual meeting of the Central Indiana Council on Aging. Since its inception in 2004, the Senior Fund has awarded more than $5.2 million in support of programs and organizations working to improve the quality of life for older adults in the region.

Michigan

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek has awarded a three-year, $676,000 grant to the Community Foundation for Muskegon County in support of the HEALTHY Muskegon initiative, which will focus on getting affordable, healthy local foods to citizens in the cities of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights, Mlive.com reports. The funding includes $240,000 to be awarded to programs and organizations working to improve access to affordable fresh foods for inner-city families and their children and teach them how to prepare them at home. Another $150,000 will be put into a committee-directed fund at the community foundation that will be used to continue the healthy foods initiative after the initial three-year period is over, while approximately $85,000 a year will be used to bring experts from the food industry to Muskegon.

South Carolina

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has been tapped to administer the Jim and Margaret Krum Foundation, an $8.4 million scholarship fund that provides support for Beaufort County students, the Island Packet reports. Krum scholarships have been awarded since 2003, providing on average $8,500 a year to students who have excelled in high school and are active in community service.

Washington

Casey Family Programs has appointed Seattle Foundation president and CEO Norman Rice to its seven-member board of trustees. Rice is a former mayor of Seattle.
