Legacy Foundation Announces $1.1 Million in Grants and Scholarships
The Legacy Foundation in Merrillville,Indiana, has announced nearly $1.1 million in grants and scholarships to Lake County organizations and residents.
The awards include $260,000 in new scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year and $531,000 in scholarship renewals. The foundation manages thirty scholarship programs and chooses scholarship recipients through committees comprised of community volunteers. The foundation also awarded nearly $306,000 in grants to northwest Indiana nonprofit organizations working to improve the quality of life and educational opportunities for area residents.
Grant recipients include Catholic Charities, which will use the funds to renovate parks and vacant lots in Gary; the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, which is partnering with Avicenna Academy, the town of Merrillville, and GrowNWI to build a teaching garden; Miller Beach Arts and Creative District for five pop-up art events; Parents as Teachers of Lake County, which will use its grant to provide parent educator services to the community; School City of Hobart in support of senior arts programming in the community; Purdue University Calumet Education Talent Search in support of college- and career-readiness programming; and the Gary Public Library, which will use the funds to help create a sustainability model for the South Shore Museum and Cultural Center.
"This significant investment in the quality of life and educational attainment of northwest Indiana residents marks a new milestone for Legacy Foundation," said the foundation's president and CEO, Harry Vande Velde III. "We are leading the way in creating positive impact through funding that enhances the community, creates an informed and engaged citizenry, and helps youth graduate high school and realize their higher education and career goals."
