The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the appointment of JOANN SCIARRINO, executive vice president for BBDO North America, as Knight Chair in Digital Advertising and Marketing at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Sciarrino, a twenty-five year veteran of the advertising and marketing fields, will continue to have a relationship with BBDO and its clients in order to conduct research on digital advertising innovation. She also will collaborate with PENNY ABERNATHY, the university's Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics, to develop an entrepreneurial hub that drives innovation in the field.
Casey Family Programs has announced the appointment of NORMAN B. RICE to its board. Rice, a former two-term mayor of Seattle, will remain president and CEO of the Seattle Foundation. Earlier in his career, Rice served as president and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle and subsequently served on the boards of a number of philanthropic and nonprofit organizations, including the Enterprise Foundation, 5th Avenue Theatre, YMCA of Greater Seattle, and the United Way of King County. He replaces retiring trustee and former board chair Gary Severson, who is a former board chair of First Interstate Bank of Washington.
The Donors Forum has announced the elections of BRUCE BOYD, PATRICIA LARA GARZA, and NGOAN LE to its board. Boyd is principal and managing director of Arabella Advisors. Garza is director of strategic philanthropy at Allstate. Le is vice president of programs at the Chicago Community Trust.
The Waterkeeper Alliance has announced the appointments of BRIAN ACRISH, BRYCE PERRY, JOE TOMLINSON, VIRGINIA DADEY, YVONNE ZAPPULLA and DOMINIC and HEATHER RICHARDSON to its trustee council, GLENN RINK as chair of the council, and PAUL GALLAY as treasurer. The organization also announced that JAMES CURLEIGH, GREY HECHT, and TERRY TAMMINEN will move from their roles as trustees to the organization's board. Acrish is VP of business development at global insurance broker Willis Group. Perry is vice president of green technology company IGT. Tomlinson is director of rTerra Renewable Energy Partners. Dadey is director of financial relations at wastewater remediation firm Latitude Solutions. Zappulla is managing director of Grannus Financial. Surgeon Heather Richardson and her husband, Halcyon Southeast LLC managing director Dominic Richardson, are active supporters of environmental protection. Rink heads green tech company AbTech Industries. Gallay is the Hudson Riverkeeper. Curleigh is global brand director for Levi Strauss and Company. Hecht is a green home builder, serial board member, philanthropist, farmer, and restorationist. And Tamminen is founder of Santa Monica Baykeeper.
In other news, PND notes the passing of JOAN DUNLOP, a groundbreaking champion of women's rights, of breast cancer at the age of 78. Dunlop, who worked at the Ford Foundation on urban policy projects that influenced the development of the Johnson administration's War on Poverty, also worked at New York City's municipal budget office under Mayor John V. Lindsay, at the Fund for the City of New York, and at the Population Council as an adviser to John D. Rockefeller III on population issues. She also served, for fourteen years, as the first president of the International Women's Health Coalition. Later in her career, she was vice president of public affairs for Planned Parenthood and an assistant to Vartan Gregorian when he was president of the New York Public Library. She also served on the board of the Open Society Foundations and was board chair of its International Women's Program.
