JCPenney Launches Giving Program, Awards $1 Million to USO
In conjunction with Independence Day, the J.C. Penney Company has announced the launch of a new corporate giving program, jcp cares, and a $1 million donation to the United Service Organizations (USO), a national nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of deployed troops, veterans, and military families.
Through jcp cares, the company will select a different charity partner each month and invite in-store customers to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar and donate the difference to that month's charity. The company also will make a charitable donation to the select organization. In addition, from July 23 to July 31, it will donate up to $50,000 to the USO for each customer that checks in at one of its stores using the location-based social networking service foursquare.
Charities participating in the program include the national youth and citizenship organization 4-H and the Boys & Girls Club of America (August); Teach for America (September); the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (October); Share Our Strength (November); and the Salvation Army and its annual Red Kettle campaign (December).
"Through jcp cares, we'll be able to work with our customers to address some of the most pressing issues facing our communities today," said jcp cares president Miki Woodard, who also serves as vice president of philanthropy at JCPenney. "Whether it's improving education, supporting our troops, or making sure no child goes hungry, working together, we can become a powerful force for good."
