Knight Foundation, Poynter, American Press Institute Launch Digital Training Program

Knight Foundation, Poynter, American Press Institute Launch Digital Training Program

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Poynter and American Press institutes have announced the launch of a new digital tools training program for newspaper staff.

Through the initiative, which is being funded by a $1.5 million endowment at the recently launched Poynter Foundation, Poynter will work with API and the Knight Foundation to develop a curriculum designed to teach reporters, editors, and publishers how to apply new digital tools to their work and how to foster a culture of innovation in their organizations. Led by Poynter dean Stephen Buckley, the program also will offer online and in-person sessions on products and revenue models.

Although the first set of tools to be covered by the program has yet to be determined, popular tools used in newsrooms today include the federal government database Tracfed, the in-depth reporting tool Document Cloud, NewsCred (for syndication), and OwnLocal, a platform that makes it easier for newspapers to sell digital services to merchants.

"We're right at the start of an explosion of digital tools that can make journalism much more powerful," said Michael Maness, vice president of journalism and media innovation at the Knight Foundation. "We need to find ways to build the rapid adoption of these 'power tools' into the day-to-day routines of newspapers."

“Poynter, American Press Institute and Knight Foundation Team Up to Help Newspapers With Digital Tools Training.” John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Press Release 6/25/12.
