UPS Foundation Awards $6.9 Million to Nonprofits Cultivating Diversity

The UPS Foundation has announced grants totaling $6.9 million to more than forty nonprofit organizations working to provide services to underrepresented and underserved communities around the world.

The funding will support, among other things, the development of women and young girls in emerging nations, disabled veterans, the hearing and visually impaired, and other diverse populations as defined by race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Grants include a total of more than $2.7 million to Catalyst for Women, the National Urban League, the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza, and the Human Rights Campaign for efforts to expand diversity in the workforce; a total of $900,000 to the American Indian College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the Organization of Chinese Americans, and the United Negro College Fund for scholarships; and a total of $600,000 to Accion International, Aspira of America, the CHOICES Education Group, Operation Hope, and Opportunity International to provide financial education and microloans.

The foundation also awarded more than $650,000 to organizations providing mentorship, leadership development, and training to minority populations. Grant recipients include 100 Black Men of America, Girls Incorporated, the Japanese American Citizens League, and Abilities! (formerly known as the National Center for Disability Services). And it awarded more than $350,000 in support of programs for people with disabilities, primarily around economic empowerment and transitioning into the workforce. Recipients include the National Organization on Disability, Abilities!, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the National Federation of the Blind.

"At the heart of UPS' success is service, and service depends on our people," said UPS Foundation president Eduardo Martinez. "UPS is a global company with almost four hundred thousand employees serving communities around the world, so we rely on people with a varied mix of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By supporting the critical work of these nonprofits in the diversity sector, the UPS Foundation is helping to create a sustainable platform for community resiliency."
