2012 Bergeron Scholars Announced
The University of California, Berkeley, has announced the 2012 class of Bergeron Scholars.
Funded by VeriFone Systems CEO Douglas Bergeron and his wife, Sandra, who leads several tech companies, the program provides undergraduate women who are pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with scholarships, program support, and mentorships. Launched initially at Georgia State University in 2006, the $1.5 million program was brought to UC Berkeley by the Bergerons in the fall of 2011.
The 2012 recipients at UC Berkeley are Annie Davis, who is pursuing a degree in molecular environmental biology and aspires to be a health researcher in industry or government; Muska Fazilat, who is studying integrative biology and intends to become a medical doctor; Chu Fang (Phoebe) Tseng, who is pursuing a degree in public health, with a concentration on infectious diseases; Sarah Tulga, who is studying integrative biology and aspires to a career in research on the evolution of bone tissues; and Kaitlyn Weeber, who is pursuing a degree in chemistry with the goal of teaching or working in industry.
"Each of the Bergeron Scholars named today has demonstrated great potential for leadership in their chosen fields," said David Blinder, UC Berkeley's associate vice chancellor for university relations. "The combination of financial awards, extensive program support, and the one-on-one mentorship with a female business leader presents a unique opportunity for these five extremely talented young women."
